La Paz
The city of La Paz, meaning “Peace”, is Baja California Sur’s State Capital. With a population of about 220,000 people, La Paz is the largest city in this vast and peaceful desert landscape. The location was first visited by the Spanish in 1533 and it was officially “founded” by Cortez in 1535. It was given its current name by Captain Sebastian Vizcaino in 1596 but there wasn’t a permanent settlement in La Paz until 1811. It became Baja California Sur’s capital after Loreto, further to the north, was hit by a hurricane in the early 1800’s.
You can cross the Sea of Cortez from mainland Mexico by land, air, or ferry. La Paz offers numerous international flights from several US cities on major carriers.

When exploring the Baja Peninsula, be sure to visit La Paz—there is plenty to do for those seeking colorful, peaceful towns filled with activities. From eco-tourism, to in-season whale watching, scuba diving, beach bumming and big game fishing, La Paz has it all!

There are three beaches you must visit while in La Paz: Playa el Tecolote, Pichilingue and Balandra. Simply described as paradise, these beaches are just 20 minutes apart. Bring your own snacks and drinks while hanging out in Pichilingue and Balandra.
