Surf Safari
Ten kilometers south of Todos Santos and a 45 min. trip north from Cabo San Lucas you can find a rugged trail that leads from old Highway 1 to Los Cerritos beach, a sandy, open bay hidden on the Pacific side of the southern tip of Baja and a treasured getaway for family campers and those looking for perfect waves to surf during the winter months.
Our surf safari began with the experts at the Costa Azul Surf Shop, founded by Alejandro Olea, an expert area surfer. The Costa Azul team picked up our group at our hotel in San Lucas early one Sunday morning as we began a pleasant desert trip north on to Cerritos, an ideal place to learn.
We made our arrival fully equipped with boards of different sizes, as well as an expert team of trainers – at least one for every two people – who then unloaded our long boards and placed them neatly on the sand as we prepared for our first lesson ever in this classic and healthy ocean sport.
Our training is complete, from how to lie down on the board, to the proper way to stroke, stand up and balance once in the water. The setting was superb with a combination of waves made for all skill levels on this secluded desert beach. Cerritos is an ideal place to learn during this time of the surf season.
After our land training, we were ready to hit the water and try our luck with the white foamy waves. Our first set was clumsy as we tried to adjust to swimming out toward where the closest set of waves begins. An instructor was with us at all times, letting us know the perfect moment to begin to swim, stand and surf our way back inland!
Our goal in the excursion was met, with each of us catching at least three waves for the day, and our surf safari was made complete by a delicious lunch at the nearby town of Todos
Santos and a visit to the Todos Santos Costa Azul Surf Shop before we made our trip back to Los Cabos.
Surfing is a wonderful, exhilarating, experience that puts your senses in touch with the sea and nature surrounding this beautiful desert destination. It is a sport that the whole family can enjoy, regardless of age and skill level.
